Hello! We are Grace and Aoife, we're sixteen and are in transition year in school and are completing our Gaisce Award through The Order of Malta Cadet Unit.
Gaisce - The President's Award is a self-development program that encourages you to find your passion, get active and make a difference in your community.
We enjoy doing The Order of Malta very much and we love the feeling you get from investing your time into helping others along with meeting new people along the way.
There are three levels of the Gaisce Award - Bronze, Silver and Gold. The more time you give, the greater the reward. At the moment we are completing the Bronze award. By taking part in Gasice, you take on personal, physical and community challenges and develop new skills and new friendships.
By joining Order of Malta, we were able to complete our community involvement and new skills through volunteering and learning first aid. As part of the community involvement we go on duties along with the Senior Unit along with other initiatives such as visiting the elderly in the local nursing home. For our First Aid skills, we've completed the Cadet Basic & Intermediate First Aid course, Home Nursing Module and are currently doing the Cardiac First Responder Course.
We volunteer because as young adults we thought it was important for us to become involved in our local community. From volunteering you get a sense of sanctification as you are helping others in your community. You also grow as a person during this and gain new friendships, all through the Order of Malta.
We believe that volunteering builds better communities because the community is gaining from the youths getting involved and volunteering locally from a young age through various groups such as encouraging you to get to know and visit your elderly neighbours or been involved with First Aid duties. We also believe volunteering from a young age encourages you to continue it as you get older.
As part of the Order of Malta Cadet Unit, we meet each week for an hour & a half. By attending these meetings each week, we show that we are committed to the Unit. By doing this and completing our Gaisce Award through the Order of Malta Cadet Unit we believe we have gained many valuable life skills which we will always benefits from having in the future.
