On Friday, 13th May, Sligo Volunteer Centre celebrated its official opening of our new office space at 5 JFK Parade.  Although we moved office at the end of 2020, due to COVID19 restrictions we were never able to celebrate or open the doors to the public.  This was a great opportunity for our staff to meet with people and for prospective volunteers to stop in and have a chat with us.

Attendees and passersby were joyfully entertained by The Harmony Hill Singers and the ribbon was cut by Sligo Rovers midfielder Will Fitzgerald accompanied by his colleague Karl O’Sullivan.

Community Groups and volunteers alike are getting back into the swing of things again and there are plenty of volunteer roles for people to engage with.

We hosted a coffee morning in No. 45 High Street on Tuesday, 17th May for people who have time and life experience that they want to share with their community and other organisations in Sligo.  It was a great way for like minded people to come out and have a chat and also listen to some local organisations and charities who are actively seeking volunteers.  Our guest speakers were from Sligo Social Services, ALONE, a new programme called Social Buddies and a speaker from The Hawkswell Theatre explaining a new initiative they are promoting, called Cultural Companions.

Life experience is an invaluable asset to charities and community organisations in Sligo that are seeking the help of volunteers, and you can bring a wealth of knowledge and a particular skill set to any volunteer role.

Towards the end of the week then, Sligo Volunteer Centre along with Sligo PPN and Sligo County Council hosted a celebration event for those who volunteered over COVID and were involved in the Community Call. Attendees were presented with a commemorative pin, which was designed by a 5th Class student, Norah Doe, from St. Pauls National school in Collooney. Norah’s design was commissioned by the Government of Ireland and presented to volunteers all over the country at similar events held nationwide.

Sligo Volunteer Centre offices are now open to the public, and our Drop In Times are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am – 2pm and by appointment outside of those times. Stop in and say hello and see how Sligo Volunteer Centre can help you get started on your volunteering journey. Check out www.volunteersligo.ie or our social media channels to hear all the news.
